Lee County leaders want to add school zone cameras to unincorporated areas to keep pedestrians safe, parents say this would help hold drivers accountable.
Parents say drivers zoom down her street ignoring speed zones near Tanglewood Elementary. They are glad to hear officials like Commissioner Cecil Pendergrass are advocating for even more safety for children.
“I'd like to make a motion to direct DOT. Staff to pursue implementation of school zone enforcement at all eligible school zones with unincorporated Lee County by the beginning of 2025-2026 school year,” he said. “This will improve safety for students and drivers and bring it back to the board for final approval.”
Unincorporated Lee County would be following after Cape Coral, which is the first area to start installing school zone cameras in Lee County. They are still working to install 13 in their school zones.
“I think everybody, every driver should respect the law and follow the law,” Pendergrass said. “People are not paying attention.”
As discussions continue, parts of Lee County inch closer to seeing cameras at all 42 schools in the district.
Lee schools said $12 from every speeder caught on camera will be put back into school security and student transportation.
