Egg prices are continuing to rise, leaving shoppers shocked. Gulf Coast News visited local stores in Cape Coral.
We found prices ranging from $5.46 a dozen at Aldi to $7.49 at Farmer Joe’s, with some eggs costing as much as $9.99 for a dozen.
Restaurants are also impacted, adding extra charges to egg-based meals due to the shortage.
Some residents, like Fort Myers couple John and Lynn Mazzerele, feel lucky to have their own backyard chickens. They’ve received requests from neighbors asking to buy their eggs.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture attributes the price hike to a bird flu outbreak that has severely affected egg production.
