Veronica Shoemaker Florist, located at the corner of MLK Boulevard and Veronica Shoemaker Boulevard, has been a staple in the community since its founding. The shop is celebrating a milestone: 50 years of service.
Mattie Young, the current owner of Veronica Shoemaker Florist, is quick to point out that running a successful flower shop is far from easy.
"We have a staff, we have payroll, we have budgeting," she said. "It’s not easy. There’s so much more to it than just running to the store and getting flowers."
She emphasizes that floral design is an art form — one that requires skill, dedication, and understanding of the emotions customers want to convey through flowers.
Young credits much of the business’s success to staying current with the latest trends and continually improving design techniques.
"Education is key. You have to stay up on the latest trends," she said. "Our style of design has certainly changed, and we are constantly improving."
Through workshops, events, and hands-on experience, Young’s floral expertise has blossomed into a respected skill. But success in the floral industry comes with its own pressures.
"Sometimes I get so stressed out, but this is the thing that keeps me going," Young shared. "I love it. It’s therapy for me."
For Young, the work is more than just a business. It is a ministry — a way to serve others and contribute to the community.
"This is my purpose," she said. "To serve, to help, to unify."
The shop’s name, Veronica Shoemaker Florist, honors Young’s mother, who was a trailblazer in the community. Her mother, Veronica Shoemaker, was the first African American woman elected to the Fort Myers City Council. Shoemaker played a pivotal role in securing funding for the road that now bears her name, uniting different parts of the city.
“People came together and said we should name that road after her," Young explained. "That’s how we got Veronica Shoemaker Boulevard."
For Young, carrying her mother’s legacy is a point of pride. "I’m amazed when I see her name. It's like, okay, well, my mom did all this," she said.
Young is determined to continue her mother’s work of uniting the community. Through her shop, she aims to spread joy, celebrate Fort Myers’ history, and strengthen its future.
"I’ve got to give back. I’ve got to keep the legacy going," she said. "I can’t let it go."
