A sex offender is accused of breaking into a Port Charlotte woman's home while she was sleeping.
On Sunday, Charlotte County deputies responded to a home burglary off Dowling Avenue Northeast where the suspect claimed he was forced to break into the woman's home to hide from a biker gang or possibly a group of "white supremacists." The suspect, Christopher Horvath, told deputies the group was going to beat him up because he was a pedophile.
According to deputies, Horvath was homeless at the time of the burglary and had been staying at a friend's house next door to the victim. After breaking into the home while the woman was sleeping, the homeowner discovered him in her kitchen and immediately screamed for him to leave before calling 911.
The home Horvath allegedly broke into was located less than 300 feet from Higgs Park, a popular local spot for families and children.
Horvath has been arrested and is currently being held at the Charlotte County Jail on a $50,000 bond. He has been ordered to stay at least 500 feet away from the victim’s home.
During the investigation, deputies found a pair of pink women's underwear in Horvath's pocket. The homeowner confirmed that the underwear did not belong to her.
