In a world where love often fades too quickly, Herb and Caroll Koelling's devotion is ever-lasting.
As Herb and Caroll look through old photos in their Vi at Bentley Village home, they can't help but dote over each other.
"This is high school graduation. What a cutie," Herb said.
"Oh, stop it," Caroll said.
Their romance started in 1944 when Herb stole Caroll from his fraternity brother in college.
"I had fun with that, too," Herb said, laughing. "She had big sparkly eyes, and she smiled a lot."
A few years later, the rest is history.
"I didn't get an engagement ring," Caroll said.
"Yes, you did," Herb said.
Both say at the same time, "Twenty-five years later," and laugh.
They've never been big fans of grand gestures, but this couple has a lifetime of memories to go along with three sons, 10 grandkids, and five great-grandkids.
"We just bumbled along," Carroll said, laughing.
As of this year, Herb and Caroll have bumbled along for 72 years of marriage.
When people learn they've been married for over seven decades, Herb can't help but laugh at mimicking the response.
"Oh my god!" Herb said. "I can't believe that!"
Dedication is something they encourage in other couples who admire their love story.
"It's so different now than when we got married," Carroll said.
"I think their expectations may be a lot higher than ours were," Herb said. "I think they expect to be at our level right away. It only took us 60 years."
So, while big displays of affection are nice, it's the commitment that guides Herb and Carroll to stay the course.
"He got me a card; it said he loved me more than bacon," Carroll said.
Commitment and a whole lot of patience, too.
