It's an issue that has plagued our wallets for months now: expensive egg prices. The average price for a dozen eggs right now is about $6.36. Gas, milk and water are cheaper than eggs.
The idea is something extra hard to get eggs on the cheap, including getting them from the source.
Justin Donato doesn't look at prices when he buys eggs, but he understands the reason why people want their own hens.
"It's like growing your own fruits and vegetables. It's along the same lines of providing stuff for yourself so you don't have to buy it," said Donato, a Fort Myers resident.
Having hens in your backyard may sound like a good idea, but there are rules and regulations. Lee County says the legality is different depending on where you live.
In Fort Myers, the city has a backyard hen program if you want your own eggs.
"Feel like anybody could have a chicken if they got the right surroundings," said Bruce Audet, a Fort Myers resident.
The city says you are not allowed to have roosters, but can have four hens per 800 square feet of a lot. The hens must be fenced in a coop and clean at all times.
"If you decide to live in a place where you can't have chickens, then you can't have chickens; if you want chickens, move to somewhere where you can have them," Donato said.
Lee County says backyard chickens are also permitted in unincorporated areas in designated agricultural districts.
