A man has been sentenced to 35 years in prison after pleading guilty to DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide in connection with a fatal crash on a rural road.
The crash killed a mother and her 13-year-old child and left two others seriously injured.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened on a Friday evening, September 2, 2022, on County Road 660 near US-17.
Investigators said a sedan collided with the rear of a John Deere utility vehicle, causing it to veer off the road. All four occupants of the utility vehicle were thrown from it.
A 33-year-old woman and her 13-year-old son died from their injuries, while the driver, a 39-year-old man, and a 10-year-old passenger suffered serious injuries.
The driver of the sedan, later identified as Garret Cole Edwards, 27, was arrested after an investigation determined he was impaired at the time of the crash.
Edwards recently pleaded guilty to DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide. He was sentenced to 35 years in prison for his role in the crash.
