Some Florida residents could get the chance to grow their own marijuana. A Republican senator has introduced a bill that would allow it, but not everyone is OK with getting their hands on weed.
Republican state Sen. Joe Gruters' bill would allow those who need it medically to grow it.
Attorney Paula Savchenko, who works in the cannabis industry, calls it important.
“I think Sen. Gruters did a good job for allowing for balancing and allowing homegrown cultivation,” Savchenko said.
However, Republican Sen. Jonathan Martin of Fort Myers disagrees, saying the bill doesn't address the fact marijuana is illegal under federal law and the bill doesn't regulate THC concentration, calling it "do it yourself medication."
The group known as Smart and Safe has already started collecting signatures to get recreational use back on the ballot.
Cole Peacock, who owns Seed and Bean in Fort Myers, believes the initiative has a good chance of passing in 2026. The ballot measure needs 60% of voters to approve it. It fell short last year with 56% approval.
“The legislature could be very proactive and get in front of that and put some regulatory issues in place,” Peacock said.
Peacock's company has applied for a medical dispensary license. He's not convinced Gruters' bill to grow marijuana will pass.
“Because now you're taking that medical, and you're supposed to go to a dispensary and have a card. Now you can grow two plants at your house. I don't think that is going to pass,” Peacock said.
Gruters' bill would limit homegrown plants for those 21 years and older if it passes.
