A Port Charlotte High School student was arrested after a BB gun was found in his backpack.
According to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office, school staff told school resource deputies that they received reports of a student in possession of a firearm at approximately 11:45 a.m. Friday.
School resource deputies, administrative staff and a Charlotte County Public Schools Guardian removed Jeremiah Bernardez, 18, from his class.
His backpack was taken for an administrative search.
According to the CCSO news release, a BB gun that closely resembled a lethal firearm was found inside his backpack.
CCSO said none of the reports received indicated a threat being made, nor did any reports mention Bernardez presenting the weapon to students or staff.
Bernardez told investigators he found the BB gun recently and had forgotten it was in his bag.
He was arrested and charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds. Bernardez was taken to the Charlotte County Jail.
