So many things can put a strain on our mental health, but you can find help right here on our Gulf Coast.
"There's a mental health crisis in Southwest Florida as there's a mental health crisis across the nation," said Scott Burgess, CEO of David Lawrence Centers for Behavioral Health.
Burgess said their main goal is helping people 24/7 who have problems with mental health and substance abuse disorders.
"We have a whole cadre of community-based support, individual counseling, group counseling," Burgess said.
They’ve also partnered with an app called UBYou, which was created by Florida Gulf Coast University alumni Jack Hellmer.
"Universities have so many amazing resources available, but it can be hard for students to find them if they don't know about them. That's really where making it a place of, I can get comfort in knowing I can find these amazing resources on this app," Hellmer said.
Resources are now available to all 16,000 students at FGCU after they became available in May. Hellmer says the app took years to create and was driven by his own struggles with mental health.
"Life experiences happened, loss of loved ones, stress, and it was the first time I really ever experienced the physical and mental symptoms of anxiety," Hellmer said.
Hellmer created UBYou through FGCU'S entrepreneurship program. Now, students can find help for everything from mental health struggles, to something as simple as eliminating stress by helping new students around campus.
"A freshman came up to me and said, I was so stressed out my first day because I didn't know where my building was for class, so I went on and I found the campus map, and it brought me to my class. That was never the intention of it. Never in my mind did I think a student would use it for that. But knowing that it helped them through their day is what makes it all worth it," Hellmer said.
Landyn Higginbotham is a sophomore at FGCU. She said the UBYou app has come in handy for her in so many ways.
"I love the daily check-ins and the daily affirmations. I think it's really helpful to start my day with an affirmation, and I can pick which topic I would like to do my affirmation in," Higginbotham said.
