Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell has been appointed to Florida’s State Immigration Enforcement Council, a move that reinforces the role of local law enforcement in addressing illegal immigration and enhancing public safety across the state.
According to Florida House Speaker Daniel Perez, who announced the appointment Tuesday, Prummell’s decades of experience make him a valuable addition to the council.
“Sheriff Prummell has demonstrated strong leadership and a deep commitment to public safety,” Perez said. “His experience in intelligence-led policing and his work within the Florida Sheriffs Association will be critical as we continue efforts to uphold the rule of law and protect Florida communities.”
Prummell has served as Charlotte County’s sheriff since 2012.
He is also the current president of the Florida Sheriffs Association and a graduate of the FBI National Academy.
“Throughout my years in law enforcement, I have seen firsthand the impact that strong enforcement efforts can have on keeping communities safe,” Prummell said. “I’m honored to be appointed to this council and look forward to ensuring that Florida continues to enforce its immigration laws while protecting our citizens.”
The State Immigration Enforcement Council was established under Senate Bill 2C and recently signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis. The council assists the State Board of Immigration Enforcement—composed of the governor and his cabinet—by providing recommendations on enforcing federal immigration laws.
Among its duties, the council will advise on law enforcement efforts, recommend training strategies in coordination with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and provide insight on financial and operational needs.
Prummell will serve alongside other law enforcement leaders, including Duval County Sheriff T.K. Waters, who was also appointed by Speaker Perez.
The council consists of eight members: four police chiefs appointed by the governor, as well as four sheriffs, with two appointed by the Senate president and two by the House speaker.
