A pedestrian was killed Monday evening after being struck by a car on State Road 80 near Grandma's Grove, causing road closures and traffic delays.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a pickup truck hauling a trailer was heading westbound when a trash bag flew off.
The driver, a 61-year-old man from Lehigh Acres, pulled over onto the inside shoulder with hazard lights flashing.
As his 61-year-old male passenger from Alva stepped out to retrieve the bag, a car heading westbound failed to move over and hit the pedestrian, as well as the pickup truck’s mirror and trailer.
The victim was flown to Gulf Coast Medical Center, where he later died.
The sedan was driven by a 27-year-old woman from Fort Myers. No other injuries were reported.
The crash remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol’s Traffic Homicide Unit. Authorities have not said if charges will be filed.
