The Sanibel Police Department celebrated an officer who saved an infant's life in December.
The department said on Dec. 26, Corporal Serrago responded to a 9-1-1 call where an infant was not breathing due to choking.
Cpl. James Serrago used first-aid training to save the infant's life. Serrago was able to clear the infant's throat, allowing them to breathe again.
He spoke exclusively with Gulf Coast News.
"I put the baby in a downward position," Serrago said. "I began giving it black slaps. I get spit up on me. Which, that was awesome. Let the baby upright. You can see the stomach rising, making sure it's good. I let them know that the baby is breathing."
This happened in the morning in a parking garage along Periwinkle Way, next to Jerry's Foods.
"I don't have kids myself, but I know kids are very fragile, so I'm freaking out," he said. "I let my training and experience kick in, do what I can to try to help the parents and the child in that moment."
It's a day he'll never forget.
"I'm getting choked up now because it was a tough day, but I'm glad I was able to be there."
