A project to widen Burnt Store Isles began earlier this year and is set to continue through early June, improving infrastructure and canal access for seawall repairs.
The construction work, which started Jan. 17, includes the installation of a new vinyl wall and soil work to support future growth in the area.
According to city officials, the Burnt Store Isles Lock will remain open for limited travel, providing a 40-foot lane for barges moving through the canal system.
The lock will be accessible to boaters before 7 a.m., between noon and 1 p.m., and after 5 p.m. each workday. Construction crews are on-site weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with additional work scheduled for most Saturdays.
Officials advise boaters to pass through the lock quickly and avoid engaging with workers, as crews will not be available to answer project-related questions. Travelers assume all risks when using the lock during construction.
The project is part of Punta Gorda’s five-year Citywide Master Plan, which aims to improve infrastructure to support projected growth. City officials and contractors are working to complete the project ahead of schedule.
