A cleanup effort is underway at the home of 85-year-old Harold Leriche in Cape Coral, where piles of belongings have been accumulating outside his house for some time.
Leriche has been facing a daily fine of $150 from the city for the clutter, but he’s hopeful that a community cleanup scheduled for tomorrow will put an end to the issue.
Kaylee Moskwa, a Fort Myers resident, is organizing the cleanup after learning about the situation through social media. After seeing the posts, Moskwa felt compelled to help, knowing that there was more to the story than just a messy yard.
"When I saw the most recent posts, I said, you know, we should help this person," she said.
Leriche’s home on SE 13th Terrace has become a neighborhood concern, with many noticing the items covered by tarps outside. Leriche himself admitted that the situation pains him.
"It doesn’t bother anybody more than it bothers me to see this," he said. "I know people walk by and I can see their resentment in their eyes, and I don’t blame them."
In an exclusive interview, Leriche opened up about the difficult years he’s been through. He lost his son-in-law, and his daughter went to jail shortly after. At the same time, he began facing health problems, making it harder to manage the growing pile of belongings.
"They don’t realize how bad I feel about it," Leriche said, visibly upset. "I can’t feel any worse than they do."
Melissa Summers, a close friend of Leriche’s, is also helping to organize the cleanup. Summers knows how much Leriche wants to clear out the mess and emphasizes that it’s important to offer support when someone is struggling.
For Moskwa, the decision to help came from personal experience.
"After I heard his story, I’ve actually been through a lot of what he’s been through," she said. "I would just hope that someone would help me. I’m just kind of fed up with all the negativity. So I want to help someone, and hopefully, it’ll reach other people, and people will start helping more."
The cleanup will take place Saturday afternoon, with volunteers coming together to sort through the items outside Leriche’s home.
The goal is to identify what can be saved, donated, or discarded, offering Leriche a chance to finally clear his driveway and relieve the pressure of the fines. The cleanup serves as a reminder of the power of community support and how a small act of kindness can truly make a difference in someone’s life.
