Just days after surviving a terrifying Delta plane crash, Nate Richie is making his way back home to Cape Coral, still grappling with the trauma of what happened.
Richie was on board Delta Flight 1092, heading to the Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday. Moments after touchdown, the plane veered off the runway and flipped onto its roof, trapping passengers inside.
“I was just thinking, this is it. This is where I’m going to die,” Richie said." I still had that feeling, even exiting the door of the plane. It felt like it in the moment, it was going to, you know, ignite, explode."
The chaos unfolded in an instant. Screaming, the sound of metal crunching, the strong smell of fuel, and the jarring sensation of the plane rolling left Richie frozen in fear.
“When it started rolling like this, it started to get really scary, almost like slow motion, like a Matrix movie or something,” he said.
Hanging upside down in his seat, Richie said his life flashed before his eyes — his wife, kids, grandkids, and friends all coming to mind. Then, survival mode kicked in.
He unbuckled his seatbelt, fell to the ceiling of the overturned plane, and started helping others escape.
Outside, he turned back to see the wreckage.
“I remember staring at the plane and saying, ‘This is awful. This isn’t normal,’” he said. "Within a minute or two of that, there was an explosion on the plane."
Now, as he makes his way home, the physical pain lingers, but the mental toll is worse.
“I’m still in a lot of pain. But, mentally, it’s worse,” Richie said. "I had a lot of trouble sleeping. I keep just replaying events over and over and over in my mind. There are a lot of emotions that I'm trying to understand to deal with. Almost like a grieving process."
Richie says the experience is a sobering reminder of life’s fragility.
“If you’re a person of faith, say your prayers. Hug your loved ones. Because anything can happen at any time," Richie said.
Richie says it’ll be a long time before he steps onto a plane again — if ever.
