Drivers passing through the school zone near the Sanibel School now have an extra reason to slow down.
The city has installed speed enforcement cameras next to the school zone speed limit sign as part of an effort to improve student safety along the Gulf Coast.
Starting this week, motorists will only get a warning if they are caught speeding — but starting March 31, drivers could face a $100 citation if caught driving 10 mph over the speed limit.
This is all part of the automated speed enforcement program. According to a study, more than 500 drivers sped through the Sanibel School zone during school hours.
This is an effort happening across the Gulf Coast. We know Cape Coral has cameras ready to go live across the city along their school zones.
Lee County also wants to add speed cameras to unincorporated parts of the county. Our neighbors in Hendry County also have several of these cameras up and running.
Automated speed enforcement will only occur on school days during school hours, which is between 7:15 a.m. and 2:35 p.m.
