Exclusive: Attorney John Morgan confirms he's considering run for governor

The race for Florida governor may be over a year away but it's getting interesting as famed Attorney John Morgan and First Lady Casey DeSantis fuel speculation they could run.

Morgan announced this week he wants to start a third party to give voters more choices and he told Gulf Coast News political correspondent Dave Elias that he is taking a potential run for governor very seriously.

“Part of the problem with American politics is that there are only two parties,” Morgan stressed.

The outspoken attorney said that is one of his top reasons for wanting to create a third party.

John Morgan: Both parties continue to get crazier and crazier and more extreme and the rest of us in the middle are left out.

Dave Elias: You know John, a lot of people are saying that party is going to need a leader. Would that be you?

John Morgan: I don't know. I'm going to just test the waters. But it doesn't have to be me.

Dave Elias: You've got the name recognition. Would you at least consider it?

John Morgan: I would consider it. I’m 68, I'll be 69. My energy is not… I don't want to be low-energy John like Jeb… I would consider it if all the stars lined up.

Republican Byron Donalds announced this week he'll run.

Casey DeSantis is fueling speculation that she may run.

When asked what advantage Morgan would have running as his own party leader, Lee County Supervisor of Elections Tommy Doyle said with his name recognition he would advance directly to the General Election.

Doyle pointed out that Morgan would avoid a primary challenge. Giving him time to make a decision.

“I'm going to watch this whole thing this year. Look, I'm watching Byron Donalds. I'm watching Casey DeSantis … the DeSantis's don't want to leave. Once those horses turn around the backstretch and start coming down the home stretch, then I'll decide,” Morgan concluded.

Morgan stressed he has plenty of time to test the waters before making a decision. He did drop other names of who could potentially lead his third party, including Miami Beach Mayor Phil Levine as one possibility.
