The heart is a strong, muscular organ that pumps blood through your body. However, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S.
February is American Heart Health Month, and Justin Ceravolo, pharmacist and owner of Cypress Wellness Pharmacy, joined Gulf Coast News to give some heart-savvy tips to help keep your health healthy.
Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a leading risk factor for heart disease. A healthy level of blood pressure is less than 120/80 mm Hg while high blood pressure is 130/80 mm Hg or higher.
However, affordability challenges can often lead heart patients to skip, delay or forgo treatment for their high blood pressure. Many common heart conditions have generic medications available that patients may not be aware of. A pharmacist can help steer patients toward more affordable options. At Cypress Wellness Pharmacy, they offer custom packaging services to help organize your daily heart medication.
Also, some lifestyle habits can improve heart health such as not smoking, having a healthy weight, being active and eating a healthy diet. Dr. Ceravolo recommends two to three vitamins and supplements that can promote better heart health. Vitamins like Omega-3 fatty acids, coenzyme Q10, etc.
He also suggested reading labels carefully and learning about any warnings for drugs you take. Also, ask your health care professional or pharmacist what to avoid when prescribed a new medication.
