Punta Gorda city leaders will meet on Wednesday to discuss the possibility of allowing gambling within city limits.
This meeting is purely a discussion, as gambling is largely prohibited in Florida, with a few exceptions.
Legal forms of gambling in the state include pari-mutuel betting, such as horse racing and cardrooms, as well as casino gambling on tribal lands like Seminole Casino.
State-run lotteries, including Mega Millions and Powerball, are also permitted, along with bingo, raffles, and small private social games.
Currently, Charlotte County prohibits casino gambling.
During the meeting, city council members will examine the potential impacts of allowing gambling, including its effects on the local economy, tourism and community values.
Casino gambling within city limits would only be possible if voters approve it through a county-wide referendum.
No votes will be taken during Wednesday’s meeting, as the discussion is purely exploratory.
