Florida Highway Patrol arrested two drivers Thursday night, Rafael Antonio Jimenez, 28 and Gustave Louimat,19 for going 100 mph on State Road-82 near Shawnee Road.
Drivers Gulf Coast News spoke to on Friday are familiar with people trying to turn the road into a racetrack. Some drivers avoid it because they know the dangers.
"When people overdo it, it's even worse putting people in danger we're already in danger every day," said Orlando Montez.
The listed speed limit on SR-82 is 55, drivers say people don't pay attention to that at all.
"Every once in a while, you meet a guy that's going 200," said Xavier Walker, a Cape Coral resident. "I think some [drivers] feel that that's just what's cool to them, and I don't know, being a danger to society is fun for some reason to some people."
Troopers impounded their vehicles for 30 days in addition of drivers being arrested. Drivers are thankful that FHP is doing what they can to keep people safe.
"At the end of the day, these cops are saving your life. They're protecting other people's lives if it means they got to go to that extreme, then so be it but at least your alive," said Motez.
Florida Highway Patrol says State Road 82 is a public roadway used by thousands of families every day. There are residential communities, businesses, and schools all along State Road 82.
There are rules and speed limits that we fully expect to be followed. Safe, responsible driving on State Road 82 is always required. It benefits everyone and saves lives.
State Troopers will continue to arrest anyone racing, driving recklessly or impaired.
