As mushrooms grow in popularity, a Buckingham businessman is offering his own farm-to-table mushrooms.
You can find a lot at farmer's markets, but have you ever thought about what's missing in a lot of them? Mushrooms can be a lot harder to find.
Advertisements have flooded social media, advertising mushrooms for either gourmet or medicinal benefits. It can be difficult to verify their authenticity. But as mushrooms grow in popularity, one local Buckingham businessman is offering his own farm-to-table mushrooms.
We're taking a closer look at the fungus among us.
A pink oyster mushroom was grown in the grow house of Mindcap Mushrooms in Buckingham, Florida, part of a larger trend of homegrown mushrooms.
"And you twist and pull, and there you go, you have your cluster of mushrooms right there," said local businessman Daniel Waddell.
You've probably seen the ads online already — mushroom products are everywhere! And they're only growing in popularity. But often these products can be mislabeled or are of low quality.
"They looked into it, and there was a huge selection of them that was not even the mushroom they claimed to be," said Waddell.
But here in this local growhouse, you get to see and know exactly what you're getting.
"So knowing the product you have and being local grown, actually seeing it right here, we grow, freeze dry and process right here," he said. "Right now, we are doing blue oyster, pink oyster, lion's mane, cordyceps — that's a very rare, medicinal one — turkey tail and reishi."
Just like local produce is better than store-bought, the same goes for mushrooms as well.
And for those who don't like mushrooms?
"What I tell them right away, saying you don't like mushrooms is like saying you don't like vegetables. One to the next is a big difference," he said.
Don't knock it till you try it.
