A Lehigh Acres community is seeking information about whoever abandoned a dog tied to a stop sign.
Several people said they saw an American Bulldog at the intersection of Hepburn Avenue and Knapp Street off Homestead Road in Lehigh Acres from Wednesday night into Thursday morning.
Marie Jean Baptiste was one of the witnesses.
"I saw the dog by the stop sign, and then I just passed. The next day, the police came to knock on my door about the dog. I told them, yes, I saw the dog the night before," Baptiste said.
Reports indicate that when a Lee County Animal Services (DAS) officer arrived, a good Samaritan was already on the scene, providing food and water to the dog with the help of an LCSO deputy.
The Samaritan said a contractor had first spotted the dog Wednesday night tethered at the intersection and again Thursday morning. The good Samaritan then took action, providing food for the dog.
The DAS officer impounded the dog, who showed no visible signs of neglect or abuse.
Deputies canvassed the area for surveillance footage but were unable to find any, likely due to the remote location where the dog was left. The dog was also not microchipped and had no identifying tags.
The story left many Lehigh Acres residents upset.
"Horrible. Horrible. It's very horrible. having so many things over here. Shelters so many options. Leaving a dog in the middle of the street. It's a really horrible experience," Lehigh Acres resident Aquiles Pereira said.
LCSO reports the dog is in good health. The DAS says the dog remains at their facility and is not yet available for adoption.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Lee County Animal Cruelty Task Force or Crime Stoppers.
