Roundabouts are something you either like or don’t. The City of Cape Coral has a few, but they may be adding more.
The Cape Coral City Council is talking about adding four new roundabouts to the city at their Committee of the Whole meeting on Wednesday.
The roundabouts would be at:
NE 24th Avenue & Kismet Pkwy, NE 24th Avenue & Diplomat Pkwy, Old Burnt Store Road & Kismet Pkwy, Old Burnt Store Road & Tropicana Parkway.
They would each cost about $2 million to $4 million.
"They don't seem to care about our tax money," said Cape Coral resident Joseph Blairs. "They just do what they want to do."
Blairs lives near Burnt Store road and Tropicana Pkwy, where the Tropicana Park is being built. He said he finds roundabouts confusing.
"That would cause problems, too, and there is going to be kids in the area," Blairs said.
Joseph Philpott lives right there, too. He doesn’t think it’s a good idea to add one because people find them confusing.
"I think a four-way stop sign would be a lot easier and a lot easier to understand," he said. "Elderly people really don't know how to yield inside there, and it's going to cause accidents."
Cape Coral Council Member Jennifer Nelson Lastra believes the roundabout will help.
"They're safer for pedestrians, and there's no traffic jam like you won't you won't ever see a backup at a roundabout," she said.
Nelson Lastra said another big reason why everyone could benefit from more has to do with hurricane season.
"With street lights, you have the power," she said. "That goes out during a storm. You have no street light, you have no safety."
