Crews began working on Collier County's first diverging diamond interchange on Pine Ridge Road and Interstate 75 on Monday night.
The Florida Department of Transportation says the project is designed to improve traffic flow.
The diamond switches traffic to the left side of the road at traffic lights, allowing for safer left turns without crossing oncoming traffic. The goal is to cut down on crashes and reduce time spent at red lights. But drivers have mixed opinions on whether this will help or make things worse.
"It's out of control. The cause is all the building, all this construction," said Laura Cox, a Naples resident. "I mean, so they can do a diverging or whatever the heck they want to do, but that's just a Band-Aid. And that Band-Aid is going to fall right off."
Others, like Naples resident Matthew Philpot, are more optimistic.
"I think the quicker, the better. But, these projects tend to take longer. You know, here comes the summer with the storms. As long as it's on schedule and it can get done. I think it's going to be a benefit," Philpot said.
Construction will take place from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. with potential overnight lane closures. The project is expected to take about two years and is scheduled for completion in 2027.
