A $1.1 billion expansion at Southwest Florida International Airport is officially underway, bringing 14 new gates to the upcoming Concourse E.
The project is expected to improve passenger flow and accommodate the region’s growing travel demand. A groundbreaking ceremony for phase two of the new concourse is set to take place on Wednesday morning.
The Lee County Port Authority said the airport saw a record-breaking 11 million travelers in 2024. Officials say the additional gates will be important in meeting the increasing air traffic and enhancing the overall passenger experience.
Phase one of the project , which began in October, has already presented challenges. Crews reportedly encountered structural damage while connecting the new building to the existing terminal.
The project is also running more than four years behind schedule and has exceeded its budget by hundreds of millions of dollars.
This phase includes a new security checkpoint, retail shops and food & beverage concessions. It will also feature advanced high-tech windows designed for energy efficiency and passenger comfort.
However, many of these high-tech windows were left out in hurricanes and harsh weather conditions for nearly two years. As a result, a significant number are now damaged beyond repair.
Despite these setbacks, the airport is moving forward with phase two of the expansion.
The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday, marking a major milestone in the airport’s, and Southwest Florida's, growth.
