A 14-year-old boy is recovering in the hospital after being hit by an SUV while crossing a busy intersection in Cape Coral on Tuesday night.
Dylan Rinehart said he was crossing the intersection of Veterans Parkway and Santa Barbara Boulevard with friends when he didn't notice the light turn green. He then felt the impact and blacked out.
"I was just knocked out from the shock," said Dylan Rinehart.
An SUV hit and ran over Dylan at the intersection.
"I just remember sitting on the ground crying, and there was a hole in my leg," said Dylan Rinehart.
Nicholas Stewart, who witnessed the crash from his office building, said his surveillance cameras captured the moment Dylan rode into the SUV's path.
"The first kid went through the intersection," said Nicholas Stewart.
"I didn't expect what I saw on the video. It's an extremely graphic video, so it was surprising even to me," said Nicholas Stewart.
Dylan remains in the hospital, recovering from surgery with a long road of rehab ahead. He said he didn't see the light turn green but hopes drivers also pay attention to their surroundings.
"It was my fault. But I feel like it was her fault too because, like, I was already crossing. I understand you had a green light, but, like, you should, like, still look up, even if you have a green," said Dylan Rinehart.
Earlier that same morning, a pickup hit a man riding a bike on the other side of Veterans Parkway and Santa Barbara Boulevard by the Wawa. The man survived.
Dylan's mother said she had told him to be back before dark and not to ride that late. She said he won't be doing that again.
