Data shows that in Florida, over 1,000 people die each year due to impaired driving, part of a nationwide total exceeding 10,000 fatalities annually.
Larry Coggins, the executive director of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Florida, emphasizes the severe impact of this issue, noting that every 37 minutes, someone in the U.S. is killed by an impaired driver.
Recent reports from FHP show alarming numbers, such as 241 DUI-related crashes in Lee County in 2024.
In response, Florida lawmakers are pushing for tougher DUI laws. A bill currently under consideration in the Senate seeks to increase fines and jail time for those caught driving under the influence.
First-time offenders would face a $500 fine and at least six months in jail, with penalties doubling for second offenses.
MADD Florida supports the legislation, believing it will send a strong message about the dangers of impaired driving.
The bill also aims to close legal loopholes by addressing substances not currently included in DUI laws. If passed, the new law will go into effect in October.
