Firefighters worked through the night to contain a massive structure fire on Crescent Island, a remote area between Sanibel and Pine Island.
According to the Matlacha Pine Island Fire Control District, the Lee County Marine Emergency Response Team (MERT) was activated after reports of a fire on the island. With no road access, crews could only reach the scene by boat.
The Matlacha Pine Island Fire Control District, Sanibel Fire Department and Cape Coral Fire Department responded, with the Pine Island fire boat supplying water to battle the flames.
During the incident, a 1,000-gallon propane tank vented, intensifying the urgency of the response. Despite the challenges, firefighters successfully spared the main house, though a utility building was declared a total loss.
A Lee County Strike Team was initially dispatched but was later called off as marine units managed the fire.
