Fort Myers police are investigating who died inside a burned home on Braman Avenue early Monday morning.
Neighbors say people shouldn't be living in the home as it may have been abandoned. This death has sparked many questions in the community.
"It's a little scary. Especially now, I lock the doors more often and everything," said next-door neighbor Nehemie Fleurant.
Fort Myers police confirmed that this is a death investigation. The medical examiner could be seen pulling a body from the home.
"My mom just told me that they pulled the body out, but we just seen all the cops and everything here," said Fleurant.
The entire home and backyard were taped off. Investigators were focusing on the backyard and the minivan parked in front. On the front door of the house, a notice from 2024 says, "Building is unsafe and prohibited to live in."
"Well, I know it was like four or five months ago. Somebody rented a truck and ran through the house. So I'm surprised that anybody even lives there," said Jeffrey Arnold, who lives in the neighborhood.
Others say they have seen some people come in and out of the home.
"So a couple days before and the day before, he's been coming in and out of the house, and he's been trying to talk to us and trying to give us some things and give us food and stuff. He just likes to just walk around here and go in and out of the vacant house," said Fleurant.
Neighbors say incidents like this don't happen in their community. That's why neighbors are still in shock and trying to comprehend that such an event happened in their community.
Now, they are left with more questions than answers.
The state fire marshal is investigating, along with Fort Myers police.
