A mother is heartbroken after her 14-year-old son was hit and killed by an SUV Saturday afternoon.
People have been dropping off flowers at the crash site to remember Clayton Miller all day, especially his neighborhood friends.
Clayton was riding his e-bike with a friend near Lakeland Avenue and Madison Drive in North Naples. He rode past a stop sign and was hit by a white SUV.
The people in the SUV stopped to help Clayton, and a neighbor performed CPR.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers said he suffered critical injuries and was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
During a heartbreaking phone call, his mom, Janet Miller, said he always tried to be safe.
"So he got one for Christmas, and we gave it to him a little bit before Christmas. And he loved it, and he wanted a newer model, a newer version. And it went faster," Janet said. "I did not want to get it for him but he wanted it so bad, and all of his friends have them. He told me how careful he was going to be and how he was going to use it next year when he started high school. So we didn't have to buy a car."
Janet said he always wore a helmet and took safety seriously. She said he'd always call her to check in.
Clayton played for the Pop Warner football team, the Naples Hurricanes, since he was 5 years old. His mom said he loved sports and had many friends.
"I don't know how I'm going to live my day-to-day, but I know 100 percent that Clayton would not want me to be sad. I know that he would want me to pray to God," Janet said. "I believe he would want me to be in a church. I know that he wouldn't want me to be surrounded by my family, my friends, and I know that he would want me to be happy."
Janet said Clayton's classmates at North Naples Middle School wore white on Monday for him.
Six years ago, Clayton lost his dad to brain cancer, and now, Janet said she knows they're together.
