A brand-new orthopedic facility is almost ready to open at NCH's North Campus along Immokalee Road, marking a major milestone in the healthcare system's partnership with the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS). The 80,000-square-foot, three-story facility is set to open in spring 2025, just two years after breaking ground in November 2023. The NCH Healthcare System staff tells Gulf Coast News that the project has been on track throughout the entire two-year period.
HSS, ranked No. 1 in orthopedics for 14 consecutive years by U.S. News & World Report , is known as a one-stop shop for musculoskeletal care and has been a fixture of New York City since 1863. In just a few months, the hope is Collier County will have access to the same level of specialized treatment without leaving the Gulf Coast.
The new facility will include:
- Surgery center
- Rehabilitation center
- Pre and Post-operative care
- 15 private overnight patient rooms
The total cost of the project is approximately $120 million, funded entirely by NCH and private donations.
"We're creating a one-stop shop for orthopedic elective procedures. Under one roof, we'll be able to treat hip and knee problems, foot and ankle issues, spine conditions, shoulder injuries, and even some pediatric cases," said Dr. David Backstein, the medical director of HSS at NCH.
In a city and general area where many residents are older and are active year-round, the demand for orthopedic care is high. Many injuries stem from degenerative conditions, or athletics, according to NCH staff.
"One of the reasons a lot of people are in Naples, especially in the winter, is to play pickleball, tennis, and golf. Those activities can lead to injuries or aggravate arthritic conditions," said Dr. Backstein.
The facility boasts cutting-edge technology, including a Dari motion system that tracks a patient’s mobility before and after surgery, providing real-time progress updates. Additionally, the surgery center will be equipped with glass panels that turn frosted for privacy and clear for live-streaming surgeries to medical students and visiting physicians worldwide. A built-in artificial intelligence translation system will allow for seamless communication in any language.
"Right now, we're all hands on deck looking for clinic staff, nurses, and OR techs. We have a beautiful new space, and we need talented people to fill it," said Justin Blohm, vice president of HSS at NCH.
The facility is expected to open for patients on May 1, 2025.
