Scammers are targeting restaurants in Florida by posing as law enforcement officers and claiming an employee has been arrested.
According to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office, the fraudsters then ask the manager to send bail money, preying on fear and urgency.
The scheme is one of several scams making the rounds. Scammers are also pretending to be Xfinity employees, sending text messages with fake "verification codes" to gain access to home modems and routers. Once inside a victim’s system, they can steal usernames, passwords, and billing details.
Another recurring scam involves callers impersonating deputies and claiming to have an "important legal matter" to discuss. The scammers leave a callback number that does not belong to law enforcement.
Authorities urge residents and businesses to stay vigilant and verify any suspicious requests before taking action. Anyone who receives one of these calls is encouraged to report it to law enforcement.
