It’s not rare to see means of transportation in people’s yards, but this one is taking things to new heights. A plane was found in an open field near people’s homes in Cape Coral.
"I have no problem having a boat in a person's yard, but a plane in my backyard?" said Nancy Reposa. "Now, that's a different story."
Reposa lives diagonally from the mysterious disassembled plane that is missing a wing, door and nose. It’s in plain sight, but she hadn’t noticed it until Monday.
"I'm thinking they trucked it in overnight because I don't think the neighbors had seen it come in during the day," she said.
Dmitri Piunov, who lives across from the parked plane, said he’s seen it for the past couple of months.
"I like aviation myself," Piunov said. "For me, waking up in the morning and seeing that there, it's kind of cool, but I assume they're going to do something with it."
The plane is sitting near the intersection of Northeast Seventh Terrace and Northeast 10th Avenue, right in behind Sharkey’s Aluminum and Screen Repair. Employees there told Gulf Coast News that they are hoping to turn the plane into a table and put it into a new Cape Coral restaurant.
"I think it's a good way to recycle and repurpose old airplanes instead of them sitting somewhere in the field just rotting and rusting," he said.
However, the city of Cape Coral said it is not sure how it got there, and it is not aware of any plans for the dismantled plane.
The city said it is looking into whether this violates code.
