A man was arrested early Sunday after deputies said he was seen hiding near shipping containers behind a discount store in south Fort Myers and then ran away.
According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy patrolling near College Parkway said they saw sparks coming from metal containers behind a Dollar Tree shortly before 5 a.m.
The deputy said he saw a man wearing dark clothing and white gloves attempting to hide behind one of the containers before running away.
The deputy chased the man through the property and into the nearby Fifth Third Bank area. He was later identified as Jeffrey Silverman, 60, of south Fort Myers,
The deputy used a stun gun to stop Silverman, who was then handcuffed and taken into custody.
Deputies said they found a plastic bag filled with copper wire and metal parts near the opened metal fridges behind the store. The report states Silverman refused to speak with deputies after being read his Miranda rights.
The sheriff’s office said Silverman is a criminal registrant with a history of arrests for burglaries and thefts. He now faces charges of loitering and prowling and resisting without violence.
