After years of coaching stability, FGCU Athletics is going through a period of transition. Since the new athletic director, Colin Hargis, was hired in May, six head coaches left or announced their intentions of leaving their positions. Hargis filled all of the openings by January.
“Hopefully this wave is behind us, and now we get to move on, build, and finish out this year strong," Hargis told Gulf Coast News in January .
However, that wave is surging again. On Monday, FGCU women's basketball head coach Chelsea Lyles announced she was stepping down after just one season at the helm of the program.
Lyles's FGCU journey began as a player, while the program was transitioning from Division II to Division I. She then climbed the coaching ladder for over a decade. When Karl Smesko left for the WNBA in November, Hargis said Lyles was the obvious choice.
“This is a dream for me," Lyles said during her introductory press conference. "I love this school, I love this university, I’m passionate about it.”
Lyles led the Eagles to an undefeated conference slate, the ASUN regular season and tournament titles , and another NCAA Tournament appearance . For all of her success, FGCU's new leader was named conference coach of the year.
Following FGCU's NCAA Tournament opening-round loss to Oklahoma , Lyles spoke to the media about the future. She said she was confident in the program's future.
“We’re going to hit the recruiting trail," Lyles said after the game against Oklahoma. "We’re going to try to bring in the same type of players. Then we’re going to get to work.”
However, that work is not happening. Monday's announcement of Lyles departure came as a surprise to many, including Hargis.
“I selected her for a reason," Hargis said on Wednesday. "So, I was disappointed because I was really looking forward to building the next chapter with her.”
Hargis says Lyles spoke to him about her decision on Monday morning, but sources told Gulf Coast News on Friday that this was a possibility.
“When she met with me on Monday morning, she just said she needs to step away for some personal reasons,” Hargis said.
Hargis's efforts to persuade her into staying were unsuccessful. In fact, Lyles never signed her five-year head coaching contract that FGCU offered her back in November. She continued to work this season as the head coach on her associate head coach contract, which expires on March 31, 2025. When asked why she did not sign the new contract, Hargis had no explanation.
“[Monday morning] was the first conversation her and I had related to her current employment during the season," Hargis said.
With Lyles gone, Hargis heads back out on the hunt. This will be his sixth head coaching hire in the nest and arguably his most important. FGCU Women's Basketball has an unparalleled legacy that few schools in the country can match.
“The ball is already rolling on it," Hargis said. "We’re getting going on it this week. The initial interest in 72 hours already has me really encouraged about this next chapter.”
The hiring process will have to be quick. Many other schools have already made their coaching moves. Plus, the transfer portal is already open. The portal has been FGCU's key to consistent success. Just this past season, 11 of the 15 players on the Eagles' roster were transfers.
So far, three FGCU players have entered the transfer portal. With those departures plus the players graduating, FGCU only has six players left on its roster for next season. That number could be even lower depending on those players' decisions to use extra years of eligibility and other factors.
“We’re aware of the impact of [the transfer portal], as well as our current roster that we have," Hargis said. "So we're going to move as quickly as we can to make sure we make the right hire.”
The future of one of the country's best mid-major programs ever now rests on this hire.
