Fort Myers Police Department cracking down...

FORT MYERS, Fla. —

Fort Myers Police Department is cracking down on aggressive driving and speed enforcement along busy roads like State Road 82, Colonial Boulevard and Ortiz Avenue.

On Thursday, the department invited Gulf Coast News on one of their operations. It didn't take that long to find drivers going way faster than they should along State Road 82. The speed limit is 50mph. Two drivers were caught going 70.

Speeding is a dangerous behavior that can have serious consequences for both drivers and others on the road.

"I've been here since 2011, I've spent the most of my career out in this area doing traffic enforcement and I have noticed the speeds have gone down a little bit on 82, but they're still there," Officer Justin Trask told Gulf Coast News.

The operation is grant funded through FDOT, Fort Myers police have been doing this for a month now, targeting things drivers are not supposed to be doing.

"It's targeting driving patterns and behaviors that result in traffic crashes. Our focus is to drive down those traffic crash numbers," Trask said.

Trask wants drivers to be smart on the road. You can avoid tickets if you follow the rules.
