More safety measures in Cape Coral school zones started Monday, as the warning window closes for new speed cameras installed at school zones.
The probationary period is now over as of March 31. If you're caught going 11 miles or more over the speed limit outside any of the 17 schools in Cape Coral, you will have to fork over $100.
The speed limit is 20 mph outside Ida Baker High School, so be mindful that going 31 mph could cost you.
The City of Cape Coral had the speed cameras installed to keep everyone safe, catch speeders, and hold drivers responsible.
These cameras will operate on school days, from 30 minutes before the start of school until 30 minutes after school ends, including the entire school day, according to the city.
Drivers who receive a violation notice have three options: pay the violation, submit an affidavit explaining an exception to liability under Florida State Statute 316.1896(8), or request a hearing.
The speed cameras will catch each violation. Before you get a ticket, though, a law enforcement officer or traffic officer will double-check it to make sure everything's correct.
Cape Coral isn't the only place where you have to slow down or pay up. On March 31, citations also began on Sanibel Island.
Similar rules apply; if you're caught going more than 10 miles per hour in the school zone on Sanibel Captiva Road, you'll get a $100 citation.
The hours on Sanibel are also on school days between 7:15 a.m. and 2:35 p.m.
