A longtime college basketball coach is leaving her head coaching role to reunite with a former mentor and take the next step in her career at the professional level.

According to the Atlanta Dream, Chelsea Lyles has joined the team's coaching staff as an assistant under Head Coach Karl Smesko.
Lyles departs Florida Gulf Coast University , where she served as head coach for the 2024–25 season and led the team to an undefeated conference record and its ninth straight ASUN Tournament title.
Lyles guided FGCU to a 30-3 overall record, including 18-0 in Atlantic Sun Conference play, earning the Eagles a 14 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Her efforts earned her ASUN Coach of the Year honors in her first season as head coach.
Lyles spent 16 years with FGCU as both a player and coach, becoming a key figure in the program’s rise. She was a two-time First Team All-ASUN selection and later became known for her expertise in player development and recruiting.
“Chelsea is an exceptional basketball mind with a profound ability to connect with players,” Smesko said. “Her adaptability and leadership will be a tremendous asset to our team.”
Joining Lyles on the Dream’s revamped coaching staff is Camryn Brown, another former FGCU assistant who previously worked with Lyles and Smesko in Fort Myers, Fla. They round out a group that includes Brandi Poole and LaToya Sanders, who were hired in January.

Lyles and Brown bring continuity and familiarity with Smesko’s system as the Dream prepares for a new era in the WNBA.
