Cape Coral is planning to purchase more land to create safe havens for burrowing owls, following a similar initiative earlier this year.
Cape Coral is home to the world's largest burrowing owls. Gulf Coast News often tells you about the need to make more room for people moving to the area, and the same goes for our beloved burrowing owls.
When you're out and about in Cape Coral, you may see more lots of land dedicated to preserving these feathery fellas.
On Wednesday, Cape Coral is looking to approve buying more land to create a safe haven for burrowing owls. This is something the city already did back in February with the purchase of five lots in the northern part of the city.
The focus is along NE 5th Avenue, east of Santa Barbara Boulevard, just north of Tropicana Parkway. Below is a look at the other locations the city approved, just south of Tropicana Parkway. As you can see, all of them are relatively close to each other.
More green space and less development in certain areas like your neighborhood are expected. The area must stay as it is to help the owls thrive, meaning no big changes to the land, like clearing it for other uses. Those are just some of the rules part of preserving the burrowing owl's habitat.
Cape Coral city staff recommends the purchase to proceed with this preservation effort.
