Jim Sernovitz's lack of rhythm doesn't stop him from marching to the beat of his own drum.
"I have no musical ability," said Sernovitz. "I find out you don't need it."
After struggling with heart issues, Sernovitz started volunteering to lead a drum circle at the Baker Senior Center in Naples.
"One day, the whole room starts spinning," said Sernovitz. "I conked out. My wife came home, and I had a pacemaker put in."
For some who join in the circle, the beat inspires hope.
"My kids were like, 'You're drumming?'" said Mary Lou Fisher, who takes Sernovitz's class. "I loved it from the start."
This year, Sernovitz's passion for service won him Volunteer of the Year at the center.
"It was a surprise. I was totally shocked," said Sernovitz.
While Sernovitz discovers the rhythm of renewal, what means more is bringing people together with a beat.
"I figure I'm 79, so that means I'm in the fourth quarter," said Sernovitz. "I don't know when the whistle is going to blow, but I'm going to have as much fun and enjoyment until that whistle blows."
