Stress can take a real toll on both your mind and body. And for many of us, work is where that stress and burnout really kick in. So, how can you catch the signs and find some balance in your job?
April is National Stress Awareness Month, and Misty Bruckner, from Elite DNA Behavioral Health, joined Gulf Coast News to explain how to spot burnout.
Stress is something many of us experience on varying levels but just brush off as a part of life. However, prolonged periods of stress can have serious impacts on the body. Stress Awareness Month puts an emphasis on managing stress and encouraging people to prioritize their health, seek professional help when needed and promote mental health awareness.
The average person will spend 90,000 hours at work over their lifetime. However, work-life balance isn’t a one-size-fits-all concept; it’s a matter of finding a way to manage the demands of work and personal life while feeling fulfilled in both areas. A healthy work-life balance can help you feel motivated at work, reduce stress, improve your mental and physical health and enhance your overall well-being.
Burnout happens when we feel overwhelmed daily over a long period of time. The emotions that come with burnout often result in feelings of hopelessness, lack of motivation and overall unhappiness. This can ultimately hurt your work productivity and connections, your familial relationships and your social life. It can also cause physical implications, such as chronic fatigue, headaches, muscle pain, digestive issues and a weakened immune system.
There are ways to help better manage.
- Talk to your employer about how you’re feeling. They may be able to help you with your time management, delegating, setting boundaries and other skills.
- Prioritize eating well and drinking water. As simple as it sounds, nutritious foods provide you with energy, while fatty and sugary foods can slow you down.
- Set aside time for things that help you relax, even if it’s just for a short period. Let go of your stress by doing something you love, like spending time with loved ones, reading, meditating or exercising, or other hobbies.
