Deliberations are underway after closing arguments wrapped up Friday in the trial of Nicholas Canfield, a North Fort Myers man facing the death penalty for the 2020 murder and sexual abuse of a 2-year-old girl.
On Friday morning, the judge reviewed penalties with attorneys before jurors were brought in for instructions.
Canfield was dating 2-year-old Jaliyah Ramos's mother at the time and claimed he found the girl unresponsive in the bathtub. Deputies say she had fresh bruises and signs of abuse, along with other children in the home.
Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
