Fort Myers city leaders are one step closer to creating a new waterfront hangout spot on the Caloosahatchee River, known as Legacy Island Park.
City leaders are submitting a grant application of more than $300,000 to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to help fund improvements for the Legacy Island Park project. This spoil island will offer a new waterfront place for boating and leisure activities.
If the grant is approved, the park will feature a five-slip dock for boaters, walking trails, a public observation pier, and two beaches for paddlecraft. The beaches will be protected by a "living shoreline," which is a mix of natural elements designed to protect the land and encourage wildlife.
This project aims to remove invasive plant species and plant mangroves to support local ecosystems.
The island is expected to be ready by July of this year.
