Costco shoppers in the Fort Myers area could be saying hello to a new and improved store along Metro Parkway off Colonial Boulevard.
The Costco at Cypress Lake Parkway and US-41 was built in the 1990s, and Mayor Kevin Anderson said it has outgrown the location, hence the call for a replacement.
"Well, the way the community is grown. And even though there is another Costco in South Fort Myers, they've outgrown it. They need more space. And we just happen to have that space. And so it's a good fit. I'm sure what we're going to see is probably more gas pumps than what they currently have a larger store offering more products," Mayor Kevin Anderson said.
However, some may not be too happy as the proposed location is already home to some nearby apartments and businesses, and according to the staff report, the topic of traffic and noise came up.
So, to move forward or not, the city will decide on Monday if it should hold a public meeting on the rezoning of the proposed property location.
There's also a second Costco in Lee County on Gulf Center Drive, serving the southern portion of the county. Anderson said this replacement would stand to be beneficial for people who live and work throughout the area.
"Looking at the plat, I'm confident that they'll have the, ingress and egress done in such a way that it'll be a little bit smoother getting in and out of than the current location."
If the city council agrees to a public hearing, that will be held on April 21, 2025.
