A Port Charlotte woman is accused of torturing her dog. Odie, a 15-year-old Shih Tzu-Yorkie mix, was found in severe distress, his once-tan and white fur was completely matted and clumped with feces and urine.
Odie’s owner, 45-year-old Diana Holder, reportedly allowed Odie to suffer for years without proper grooming or care.
On Dec. 2, 2024, Holder surrendered Odie to the Animal Welfare League, explaining that she had physical limitations due to hand issues and could no longer care for him.
When veterinarians attempted to remove Odie’s matted fur, some of his skin tore off, requiring him to be put under anesthesia for his comfort and safety. In addition to the matting, Odie had long, overgrown toenails and a ruptured eye.
Brian Jones, head of Charlotte County Animal Control, said this is one of the worst matting cases he's seen in his 27 years of service.
Jones described the matted fur as so extreme that it was difficult to determine where Odie’s front or back ended. Some of the images from the case were so disturbing that they could not be shared with the public.
Jones said, "The hair was fluffing or layering, meaning that when you're taking the layers of hair off some of the skin, it's so attached to the skin it's coming up with that."
He explained that Odie’s body was covered in painful sores due to the severe matting, which had gone untreated for years.
“Every time that you move in and the hair pulls, it’s going to pull the skin with it,” Jones said.
Despite her claims of physical constraints, Jones said that the situation should not have been allowed to persist for so long.
“For people who find themselves with financial constraints or physical limitations, there are options available,” he said.
He urged pet owners in similar situations to seek help, whether through social media, local organizations, or veterinary offices, all of which can offer assistance in caring for animals in need.
Odie was placed in a hospice foster home called “One More Day,” where he spent his final days. Veterinarians determined that Odie died of old age, not as a result of his injuries.
Holder, 45, was arrested at her home along Emerald Avenue on Saturday. She is being held in the Charlotte County Jail on a charge of animal torturing with intent to cause hurt, injury or death.
The shelter reported the incident to Charlotte County Animal Control, and the State Attorney's Office pressed charges.
