Since Hurricane Ian devastated Fort Myers Beach, the town has been focused on rebuilding and revitalizing the island, especially its bayside.
A major step toward this recovery is the approval of the Arches Bayfront Hotel, a new development that will transform Moss Marina into a seven-story hotel with resort-style amenities. On Tuesday, the Fort Myers Beach local planning agency unanimously approved the hotel.
The proposed hotel will have 263 rooms and dining, shopping, and entertainment options on the water.
Ben Freeland, owner of Moss Marina and the Arches Bayfront Hotel, shared that the project’s plans have been revised based on feedback from residents and town officials.
The goal is to enhance the community by offering more access to water activities and creating a vibrant atmosphere that complements the town's charm.
While many residents, like Bret Griffis, are excited about the growth potential, concerns have been raised about increased traffic.
Griffis acknowledged that changes are needed and welcomed the development but warned that the project could bring more commercial traffic to the area.
The town council will discuss the project at their meeting in May. If plans move forward to a second reading, that will happen in June.
