Get ready to dig into the history of Florida. The team at IMAG History & Science Center in Fort Myers joined Gulf Coast News to take us back in time to the 1896 Pepper-Hearst Expedition, an archaeological excavation and discovery of artifacts from the Calusa.
Wells Moses Sawyer, an American painter, was the expedition artist. He documented the artifacts from the Key Marco dig. It is said that Sawyer's works not only document some of the best-known evidence of Florida's early Native peoples, but they also demonstrate his great skill and talent as an artist.
Sawyer's watercolors are inspiring and serve as a timeless record and connection to Florida's past.
