Once devastated by Hurricane Ian, a 50-acre property in South Fort Myers may soon see new life as a luxury RV resort.
The site, formerly home to the Century 21 Mobile Home Community, has sat vacant since it was hit by both a tornado and Hurricane Ian.
Now, the owners are proposing to rezone the land for a high-end RV park called Sanibel Siesta RV Resort, which would feature up to 390 spaces for Class A RVs, a clubhouse, pool, and pickleball courts. They chose to reinvest in the project rather than sell to developers.
Local residents noticed the proposed development when signs went up along McGregor Boulevard. Some, like Heidi Lescault, expressed concerns about traffic and noise disrupting the typically quiet neighborhood.
“I originally thought it was going to create a lot of traffic and movement,” she said.
Others, like Duncan Pearcy, acknowledged that while traffic is a concern, the change could be a positive one.
“I believe it’s going to make it better," Pearcy said.
The RV resort would allow transient stays, with visitors able to book for a minimum of three days and a maximum of six months. Rates are expected to range from $110 per night in peak season to $50 in the off-season.
Lee County officials are set to review the rezoning request on Thursday, April 17. Residents and developers alike will be watching closely to see if the project moves forward.
