A North Naples family is warning others to stay alert after a man knocked on their door late Monday night and then was caught on camera walking around their property.
Christos Dakovanos said he and his wife had just put their kids to bed and were watching TV when they heard a loud knock at the front door of their home on Golfview Drive.
“It was a pretty aggressive knock, you know, enough to kind of throw us off, and it was almost instant. As soon as my camera went off, it was bang on the door,” Dakovanos said.
Footage from the family's security camera shows a man in a red shirt knocking at the front door. Dakovanos said the man claimed his car had broken down and asked to come inside to use the bathroom.
“Which didn't make sense, you know? So naturally, I turn them away, shut the door, lock the door,” Dakovanos said.
But just moments later, Dakovanos received another camera alert — this time from the side of his house.
“So I look at the camera, and he's walking around my house. I think what deterred him was the motion light that came on,” he said.
Dakovanos reviewed more footage and said the man appeared to be looking at his vehicles and ATV before ever coming to the front door.
“If anybody knows who the gentleman might be — or even if you don’t — just keep an eye out, you know, because his behavior was concerning. And the story that he gave me, the two did not match up. I have a feeling that if maybe I would have been somebody that he thought he could have taken advantage of, he would have forced his way into the house,” he said.
A neighbor’s camera also caught the man’s car parked nearby. Despite claiming he had car trouble, footage later shows him driving away.
Dakovanos filed a report with the Collier County Sheriff’s Office.
If you recognize the man in the video, give deputies a call.
